Nvidia's new GTX 1080 - More powerful than ever

Nvidia officially reveals the first two Pascal generation GeForce graphics cards, the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070, along with their specifications and release dates.

Those who patiently waited for Nvidia's next generation of GeForce graphics cards can now breathe easily as GeForce GTX 1080 and 1070 have been unveiled and they are astonishing. Maybe it's even more exciting that PC enthusiasts don't have much longer to wait, the 1080 comes out May 27th and the 1070 short after that, on June 10th.

Potential buyers can expect the fastest GPU ever released from Nvidia. It offers two times the performance of Titan X, according to Nvidia. It runs at 2.1 GHz on the back of 7.2 billion transistors and 2560 CUDA cores, leading to as much as 9 TFlops of rendering performance. The price is fitting at $599 or $699 for what's likely to be a better oveclocking version of the card.

This doesn't mean that the 1070 will be a more scaled back card. Nvidia says that it too outperforms the Titan X, though that likely refers to the reference model of the card, not the overclockable versions. Nvidia didn't offer the broad specifications for the 1070 like they did for the 1080, but at a price of $379 for the basic and $449 for an overclocking optimized version, the Founder Edition, a "greater than Titan X performance" is more then enough to say about it.

Both cards will have 8 GB of VRAM, although the 1080 will offer a much faster GDDR5 memory to the 1070's GDDR5, unfortunately, not the HBM2 3D memory some enthusiasts were hoping for. Nvidia also discussed the shared technology in their cards, including the "Simultaneous Multi Projection Pipeline." This tech is designed for a drastic increase in multi-monitor set-ups and the adoption of VR headsets. Speaking of VR, Nvidia is experimenting with "Lens Matched Shading", which uses Virtual Reality rendering to create much clearer images.

If these performances sound too good to be true, consider that, if you're into PC gaming, VR or other GPU heavy projects, the 1080 and 1070 will be the standards for a while.
